How is the ±10% steady-state operating condition requirement applied when throughput (and therefore residence time) changes between monitoring periods?

As per rule 3.5.38(c) of the Biochar methodology, the ±10% steady-state requirement is assessed against the average operating conditions for each individual composite sample period, rather than across the entire project. This means operating conditions may change between monitoring periods, provided each composite sample period independently satisfies the required uniform operating conditions and is sampled, tested, and reported separately.

When operating conditions change between monitoring periods, the Monitoring Plan should clearly describe the relationship between the relevant process parameters (such as throughput and residence time, where applicable), the operating setpoints for each period, the continuous 1-minute interval records, the average operating conditions and corresponding ±10% range for each composite sample period, and the criteria used to identify and exclude startup, shutdown, or other anomalous operating data. Material produced outside the applicable operating window should be excluded or evaluated separately in accordance with the Biochar Ed 2025 Methodology.

The methodology provides two approaches for demonstrating uniform operating conditions:

  • 3.5.38(c)(i) Standard approach: Demonstrate compliance using carbonization temperature and residence time.

  • 3.5.38(c)(ii) Custom approach: Demonstrate uniform conditions using alternative process parameters, provided they are supported by technical evidence, documented in the Monitoring Plan, and approved before the facility audit

For each Monitoring Period, the relevant information shall be provided in the Monitoring Report, CORC Report Summary and other supporting documentation (such as laboratory reports) to disclose the operating conditions that support the final CORC claim reported for the Monitoring Period.
