Puro's Biochar Methodology 2025 classifies biochar use in landfill operations as a potentially eligible intermediate use under category WM2 (see Table 3.2 of the methodology). However, the use of biochar at a landfill is only considered acceptable when it serves a functional purpose as an intermediate layer or final cover, and the disposal of biochar in a landfill solely for storage or burial is not an eligible. Validation of this use requires robust evidence demonstrating that potential risks are minimized, including:
Evidence that the biochar is delivered to the landfill, either in mixed or pure form, and if delivered in pure form, is mixed with other constituents at the landfill before being used as cover material.
Evidence from the landfill operator describing how biochar is handled and used during normal operations (e.g., a standard operating procedure).
Evidence from the landfill operator demonstrating that procedures are in place to minimize the risk of unintentional fires and that intentional open burning of waste is not practiced.
Evidence that the landfill is classified as a sanitary landfill.
